Among the various hypnotics designed for dealing with insomnia, Zopiclone has been reported to be the most popular because of its successful impact on sleep duration without being disturbed by disturbances or breaks. Animal studies have shown the medication to have potent hypnotic activity without impacting the individual’s motor reflexes.

That said, insomnia can be an independent diagnosis or result as a secondary symptom through breathing issues, chronic pain, or stress.

Let us understand the effect of Zopiclone 7.5mg on certain conditions and its role in serving as the gateway to peaceful nights.

Zopiclone for Obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep Apnea is a common sleeping disorder that is experienced by 5% of Australians and has a profound impact on their health and overall life. The problem is characterized by partial or complete closure of the throat muscles during sleep, resulting in breathing difficulties and subsequently disturbed sleep.

Usually, continuous positive airway pressure is the first line of treatment in sleep apnea conditions with Eugeroic medications like Modafinil which are advised to manage daytime sleepiness.

Hypnotics like Zopiclone are usually not recommended in sleep apnea conditions for the patient’s safety. However recent studies have shown that the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea varies among patients and that Zopiclone has the potential to come in handy in letting a selected category of OSA patients have an undisturbed phase of sleep.

In a study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Zopiclone 7.5 mg on the severity of sleep apnea, 69 participants were screened for a trial and 30 patients were finalized. The subjects either received Zopiclone 7.5 mg one tablet nightly or a placebo for 30 days followed by in-lab polysomnography.

Out of the total subjects, 76% reported that they had had a peaceful night’s sleep with the administered drug ( Zopiclone). 36% said they would continue with the medication if available and 79% correctly perceived that the medication they had been given was Zopiclone.

The apprehension that Zopiclone impacted the Apnoea-Hypopnoea Index (an indicator of the severity of sleep apnea) was put to rest as The AHI in Zopiclone and placebo groups were almost the same. Further, the hypoxemia, next-day lethargy, and driving simulator performance that are impacted in people using sedatives were the same in Zopiclone and placebo medication.

Researchers recorded that the sleep efficiency was significantly greater in Zopiclone as compared to the placebo medication. The amount of waking up after onset of sleep which is a serious problem in insomniacs is reduced after using Zopiclone.

The study proved that using it for a month in Obstructive Sleep Apnea patients does not impact AHI or increase the risk of Hypoxaemia. Nor does it result in morning sleepiness or impact the morning alertness of the individual.

A comparison of Zopiclone with other Hypnotics

Previously, in a meta-analysis of acute and long-term treatment outcomes of Benzodiazepines held by Oxford researchers in U.K, Zopiclone with other Z drugs like Zolpidem and Eszopiclone was more effective than placebo in the acute treatment of insomnia.

In an open-cohort study in Australian General practice consisting of 55903294 consultations and comprising of 1 773 525 patients who had attended one of the 404 Australian General Practices from 2011 to 2018, the rate of usage of Zopiclone and other Z-drugs was 4.4 out of 1000 persons.

31.4% of patients recorded using repeat prescriptions for it with an annual increase of 0.8-5.9% in the proportions of prescriptions.

While it is not the first line of treatment in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, it has been recommended by medical researchers to deal with the discomfort experienced by chronic rheumatoid arthritis patients.

In a study conducted to evaluate if it could be used to counter sleep disturbances in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, 40 patients diagnosed with RA were enrolled in a two-week trial and administered Zopiclone 7.5 mg or placebo once at bedtime.

The subjects were evaluated before and after taking it and factors like degree of pain, fatigue, sleepiness, and morning stiffness were assessed. Polysomnography ( sleep study ) was conducted before and after 14 days of using the medicine.

While the other parameters remained mostly changed, researchers observed an improvement in subjective improvement in sleep.

Similarly, in a study conducted at the University of Aalborg, Denmark, proved a useful treatment option in fibromyalgia patients. Along with recording an improvement in the subjective quality of sleep, they further reported reduced tiredness lasting throughout the day.

There were fewer awakenings during the night without any changes in the deeper sleep changes. Fibromyalgia patients with sleep apnea did not experience any worsening of conditions after using it.

While the above studies were conducted outside Australia by researchers at the University of

Scandinavia and Denmark, are crucial in determining the effectiveness of Zopiclone as an effective sedative in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia have increased in prevalence among the Australian population with 1.9% and and3-5% of the people impacted with the problem. Musculoskeletal disorders were responsible for 9277 deaths in Australia in 2021 with younger and older people equally impacted with the problem.

Pain and fatigue are some of the chief symptoms experienced by rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia patients with a resulting sleep disturbance that progresses into mood disturbances and stress.

Tricyclic antidepressants and benzodiazepines though useful medications are not the ideal drugs in these conditions as they impact the sleep structure and further worsen the overall health.

It used for a short-term period can help the patient have a peaceful night’s rest.

Things to be careful about

Despite its role in helping in undisturbed sleep, you should understand that medication has been designed for short-term use, and misusing or overusing it can increase the severity of side effects. Polysomnographic data while emphasizing the effectiveness of Zopiclone has warned that overusing the medication can increase the severity of insomnia symptoms and lower sleep efficiency considerably. Further, the medication should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women as it can impact the growth and development of the fetus considerably. For safety conditions, you should use the medication as per the advice of the health care provider and taper its dose before discontinuing it.
